You will encounter tens of thousands of them in your lifetime. The one person that you want to shape and spend your life with did not become that person to you because they were a man or a woman. They became the person you loved and always will because they enjoy the same things you do, teach you new things about the world and yourself, and understand and love you in both big and small ways that no one else can. It is because your hearts are made for each other, not your “parts”.

Imagine not being able to adopt a child in need of a family, and experience the growth and joy that comes with parenthood. If the LGBTQ community continues to be unsupported and denied rights that many of us take for granted, these are the realities they face as a loving couple navigating life together. To live a life without these rights is to live one deprived of both the most important responsibilities and adventures to be had.

Take it from Drew- there is no reason that anyone with a “different” role model would be held back in life. If a child with gay parents struggles through school because they are bullied, the problem is that children are taught that being gay is wrong instead of being taught that bullying is wrong. In fact, especially in this unfortunate scenario, the LGBTQ community has often taken the opportunity to shine as role models. Despite the hate and disapproving judgement they may have experienced, many have displayed remarkable self-confidence, hope and forgiveness. These qualities are surely ones we want to see in our children.

Acceptance makes us all better role models. Especially in situations where bullying is involved, our display of acceptance of others’ differences means everything. We should be teaching our children to value people based on the way they treat others and themselves. We should not be teaching them to dismiss or cling to a person based on sexuality, race, weight, etc. None of those “identifiers” will tell you which people will encourage, motivate and inspire you in the best ways. Their behavior will.

The gay couple eating lunch next to you is not there to measure your level of comfort or acceptance. You didn’t kiss your girlfriend while out to dinner to measure the same either. The point is that who we love and how we love should have no bearing on the lives of others. The couples who are living their lives around you are doing it the same way that you are yours- as Anne put it, they’re having a human experience, not making a political statement.
